Introducing Family Connections: Support for Families Through NDIS
Inclusion Services by the Y is excited to introduce our new Family Connections service, designed to support families navigating the complexities of early intervention and the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). This service is particularly beneficial for families with children who have developmental concerns or have received a diagnosis.
Our dedicated Connections Coordinator will act as a primary point of contact, closely collaborating with our Children’s Services team to provide tailored support. This includes guiding families through early intervention services and available funding, ensuring they access the NDIS if eligible.
Understanding Early Intervention
Early intervention offers specialized support for children aged 0-6 with diagnosed disabilities, developmental delays, or other additional needs. The primary goal is to address the child's specific needs at the earliest stage, enhancing their capacity and minimizing the need for long-term support. There are five critical areas of a child's development that early intervention targets:
- Physical: Focusing on the development of the body and brain.
- Cognitive: Enhancing thinking and learning abilities.
- Behavioral: Addressing behaviors influenced by physical and cognitive growth.
- Social and Emotional: Supporting the ability to form relationships and manage emotions.
- Communication: Developing skills in speaking, listening, comprehension, and body language.
The NDIS has Early Childhood Early Intervention (ECEI) Partners, who are specialists in conducting screening assessments for developmental concerns in children aged 0-6. These partners work with families to identify short-term and, if necessary, long-term support options to help the child develop essential skills and participate in their local community. If eligible, the Early Childhood Partners will also assist in accessing the NDIS.
