A Comprehensive Guide to Transitioning to Supported Accommodation

Transitioning to supported accommodation is a significant step towards independence for individuals living with intellectual disabilities. The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) offers a variety of supported living and disability accommodation options to help you achieve this goal.

Understanding Your NDIS Planning Meeting

The journey begins with your NDIS planning meeting, where your personal goals and funding usage are discussed. To be considered for supported accommodation, your plan must highlight independent living as a core goal. If you already have an active NDIS plan, consult with your support coordinator for guidance on incorporating this goal in your next review meeting.

Finding the Right Accommodation

Once your NDIS plan includes a goal related to living independently, you can determine your eligibility for various housing options. Your support coordinator, alongside other specialists, will conduct a Functional Capacity Assessment and Housing Exploration Report to evaluate your needs. Depending on your situation, you might be suited for different types of supported accommodation.

Mainstream Housing

Mainstream housing is ideal for those needing minimal support. Options include public housing, community housing managed by private providers, the National Rental Affordability Scheme (NRAS), and private rentals. Your support coordinator can help you apply for funding to cover daily living activities and rental assistance.

Individual Living Options (ILO)

For those with medium support needs, Individual Living Options (ILO) offer flexible arrangements. You can live with a host family, a companion, or independently with support as required. A formal funding submission must be made to the NDIS to approve ILO support.

Supported Independent Living (SIL)

SIL is suitable for those needing 24/7 support and typically involves sharing accommodation with others. Similar to ILO, SIL requires a separate funding request that covers support but not accommodation costs.

Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA)

SDA provides accessible housing for people with disabilities. While it covers the accommodation, additional supports need to be applied for through ILO or SIL based on your needs.

The House Hunting Process

After determining your eligibility and housing preferences, an accommodation specialist will present suitable options. Meeting potential housemates is part of this process if you opt for shared accommodation. Secure a home before applying for ILO or SIL funding to ensure a smoother application process.

Transitioning to Your New Home

Once your NDIS accommodation funding is approved, a move-in date is set, and you will receive support to transition into your new home. You will need to cover costs like rent, food, utilities, and transport, just like in any other living arrangement.

For more detailed information on transitioning to supported accommodation, consult your support coordinator or local area coordinator.
